Dr. Larry Penley

Larry has decades of experience as a senior executive, board member and consultant.   He is President of Penley Consulting, LLC.  Recently he was President of the Thunderbird School of Global Management where he worked closely with Trustees in completing transactions that led to the viability of this historic institution.   Earlier, he was President of Colorado State University and Chancellor of the CSU System where he initiated a  new campus – CSU Global.  Larry had previously served as Dean of ASU’s business college, which became the W.P. Carey School of Business under his leadership.

Throughout his executive career he has focused on strategic market opportunities that lead to organizational transformation and financial success, At Thunderbird, the focus was a partnership that sustained Thunderbird’s world class, global education.  At Colorado State, his focus was on the great global challenges in energy and biomedicine along with student opportunities for working adults and the at-risk student.  At the W.P. Carey School, it was on management education that delivered advantages for businesses from information technology, supply chain management and services marketing.

Dr. Penley’s  global outlook has been evident throughout his career. He has lived and worked in Venezuela  and Mexico, He has been a speaker on numerous occasions in the U.S. and in Europe, South America and Asia.  His speaking engagements have primarily focused on addressing the challenges of higher education.  He was selected for a Fulbright Scholarship.  He was a member of the Faculty of the Center for Latin American Studies at ASU.  He speaks Spanish.

Regent Penley is a member of the Arizona Board of Regents.  He has served on four other educational institution boards, including ESC Toulouse and Glion Institute on whose board he now serves,  He led the business accrediting association – AACSB International – as its Chairman during its process of internationalization.  He is experienced with regional and specialized accreditation, having served as accreditation council member, site visitor, consultant, and appeals panel member.

Dr. Penley is an experienced consultant and executive coach with clients such as Fielding Graduation University, Prescott College, Tranter, Severance & Associates, Kaiser Permanente,  Adaptive Curriculum, Teledyne, enssolutions, the University of Texas at San Antonio, San Diego State University, East Tennessee State University and others.  His approach to executive consulting is to take a systems view of leadership within the context of the pragmatic realities of the business or organization.

As board member, Larry has assumed the roles of chair and responsibilities on audit, executive, and other board committees, He has served on the boards of Wells Fargo Credit Card Company, The U.S. Lead Network, Board Developer, AfterCollege, Adaptive Curriculum and Moutain States Employers Council.  He has also served on a variety of nonprofit boards, including the Catholic Community Foundation, the Hispanic MBA Association, INROADS Arizona, the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce and others.

Professor Emeritus Penley retired from Arizona State University as the Robert Herberger Arizona Heritage Chair.  He received his Ph.D. in business from the University of Georgia and his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Wake Forest University.  He has been recognized for his scholarship in management where he has published works on engagement (commitment), career strategies, and managerial communication.

In addition to his recognition with the Robert Herberger Arizona Heritage Chair, he was awarded the Frank C. Carr Founder’s Award from INROADS Arizona and Vigil Honor for service from the Boy Scouts of America; he is an Eagle Scout.  He and his wife, Yolanda moved to Arizona more than 30 years ago.  Larry is a U.S. citizen who was born in Bristol VA; he grew up in Kingsport, Tennessee.
